St James Thorley seeks to serve the community and 'make Christ known' through practical demonstrations of our love and care. Some examples of that outreach are:
Every year at Christmas, the Church, together with other Churches in Bishop's Stortford, is involved with Company at Christmas, a project to provide a meal and company to elderly people who might otherwise be all alone at that time of year.
Every summer, St James' is involved, again with other Churches in the town, in organising and running Holiday Bible Week. This is a week of music, drama, games and bible study activities for several hundred children.
Other activities by which St James' reaches out to the community include seminars by invited experts and performances by well-known groups. For example, we have in the recent past had seminars on stress and debt, been challenged by a drama on parenting and visited by two touring Christian bands.
Over the August Bank Holiday we host a Festival of Flowers & Music, offer refreshments on Sunday afternoons in summer and soup at lunchtime during the winter.
Regular leaflet drops to all the houses in the parish give details of these special events and services and also remind people that we are here to serve the community.
