It is through baptism that a Christian becomes a member of the Church and it is therefore one of the key rites of the Anglican Church.
We hold a meeting every Monday evening (except Bank Holidays), from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the St. Barnabas Centre, to explain the service and the preparations for baptism. Parents wishing to have their children baptised, and adults looking to be baptised, should call the Church Office and book a Monday evening appointment.
If a child is to be baptised (i.e. christened), the preparations will include an explanation of the promises of baptism to be made by the parents and godparents on behalf of the child.
Baptism services for children are held during the afternoon of the fourth Sunday of the month.
An adult or young person considering baptism will usually be prepared for both confirmation and baptism. Adults and young people preparing for confirmation are normally encouraged to attend an Alpha Course.
The baptism service for adults and young people often takes place on the Sunday preceding the confirmation. The candidates are encouraged to give a brief testimony of their journey into faith and make a public declaration of their commitment to Christ before being baptised. For those wishing baptism by total immersion we have a large bathing pool available.
